VOC monitor ใช้วัดการปนเปื้อนของอากาศในบริเวณกระบวนการผลิต บริเวณโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม ในที่สาธารณะ ที่มีคนแออัด ที่ในบริเวณบรรยากาศของอุตสาหกรรม (Industrial atmosphere)
อากาศภายใน (Indoor) เช่นทีอยุ่อาศัย แหล่งชุมชน และอากาศภายนอก (Outdoor air) เช่นพื้นที่โล่งที่มีเพลิงไหม้ ภูเขาไฟระเบิด บรรยากาศอุตสาหกรรม มีความเสี่ยงที่จะการปนเปื้อนจาก VOC ที่รั่วใหลของจากระบบของแก๊ซที่สกปรก (Polluted gas) มีแก๊ซอันตราย เช่นแอมโมเนีย, ซัลไฟด์, เบนซีน, ไซลีน, ทูโลอีน, เฮกเซน, ควันไฟ, ไนตรัสออกไซด์, ซัลเฟอร์ไดออกไซด์, คาร์บอนโมนอกไซด์, โอโซน และแก๊ซอันตรายอื่นๆในบรรยากาศ
VOC เหล่านี้เป็นสารปนเปื้อนที่เป็นอันตรายหากมีการสัมผัสเป็นเวลานานๆ มีความเสี่ยงต่อต่อสุขภาพและสิ่งแวดล้อมรอบตัว เช่นการเกิดผลต่อระบบทางเดินหายใจ การเกิดของโรคมะเร็ง เป็นต้น จำเป็นต้องมีเครื่องมือวัดค่าที่ถูกต้อง แม่นยำและเชื่อถือได้ เพื่อจะได้วางผนป้องกัน
การวัด VOC ของอากาศภายในห้อง และอากาศภายนอกจะต่างกัน เพราะ VOC มีแหล่งกำเนิดต่างกัน การวัด หรือตรวจสอบ VOC โดยทั่วไปแล้วจะใช้เครื่องวัดแก๊ซ (Gas detector หรือ Gas monitoring) ที่ใช้ PID sensor (Photoionization detector, PID) ซึ่งวัดปริมาณใด้แม่นยำ และใว้ใจได้
